About Our Shells

Each and every Lava Shell is a 100% real Tiger Striped Clam shell, hand-selected in the Philippine Islands for size, shape and structural integrity. The clams have been harvested by local islanders for hundreds of years to be used for food, but with no use for the shell, it was previously discarded. Now, PerfectSense Massage has taken those shells and recycled them into beautiful and effective massage tools.

The shells are composed of calcium carbonate, the same material found in our bones and teeth. The shell in the picture above is what they look like after polishing and sanding, but the shell's natural surface is white and ridged, with a rough, almost chalky texture. The color patterns present in the shell come from the nutrients the shell has absorbed throughout the clam's life--each shell's pattern is as unique as a fingerprint.

Because the shells are calcium carbonate, they give off calcium ions naturally when heated, which are transferred directly to the skin during the massage process. The calcium helps to regulate the skin's natural renewal processes and can help to give a client firmer, healthier looking skin, while also reaping all the benefits of a heated massage treatment.
